NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com)On Thursday, a federal grand jury in Florida indicted AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals USA on three charges: conspiracy, money laundering and money market manipulation. AstraZeneca has been accused of laundering money, including $2.3 billion in cash and $1.4 billion in transfers of cash to doctors, pharmacists and others. The grand jury was convened to decide the case of AstraZeneca’s co-operative with Pfizer, which, through a settlement agreement with the FDA, had paid AstraZeneca $500 million in cash to its doctors and pharmacists. The settlement was reached on April 15th, 2014.
The charges came on the same day that Pfizer agreed to pay AstraZeneca $3 billion, the largest payment in Pfizer’s history. It also agreed to pay $2.3 billion in cash for Pfizer patients who had been diagnosed with lung cancer in 2002, which the company had not yet been diagnosed with a lung cancer. Pfizer agreed to pay $1.9 billion and $1.1 billion of the cash to AstraZeneca.
